In this Third Sunday of Easter worship, we find ourselves walking the road to Emmaus with two disciples who carry the confession of being disillusioned, "we had hoped." But Jesus, the Risen Christ, has already drawn near to them. Unrecognized, he walks beside them. Through Luke's Gospel we learn that before they felt the rekindling of their hearts burning within them, the Lord was walking with them, revealing himself in the Scriptures, offering himself to them in the breaking of the bread at the table. The Lord hears and is inclined to listen, leading us back home. The burning will come again, but before that we find the passion of Jesus breaking for us and making us whole. On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, we hear the Risen Christ say words his hearers could not at first understand: I am the gate for the sheep. I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly. In John 10, Jesus draws a clear line between the Shepherd's voice and the voices of thieves and hired hands — and he tells us how to tell them apart. The Shepherd gives three things: salvation, safety, satisfaction. The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. The pattern is older than the Pharisees and as recent as our own headlines, but the Gospel goes somewhere no diagnosis can reach: the Shepherd of all humanity became a Lamb, and stood on the side of the sheep. By his wounds we have been healed. The world is saved by the Crucified One. The world is redeemed by the patience of God. On this Fifth Sunday of Easter, we watch Stephen do something remarkable at the moment of his death: he looks up. He sees Jesus — not seated, as everywhere else in the New Testament — but standing. Standing up for him. And what Stephen sees is what enables him to pray: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Lord, do not hold this sin against them. Jesus says to his frightened disciples in John 14: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Before he asks anything of them, he gives them a home. A prepared place. I am the way — not a map, not a doctrine, not a political position. A person. Follow me. 1 Peter 2 tells us the church is built from rejected stones. The people handed a false, weaponized gospel became, by the grace of God, the people who showed us what the true one looks like. And Psalm 31 gives us words for the moment: Into your hands I commit my spirit. My times are in your hands. That is where the Church is called to live — people who can tell the truth without picking up stones, because they have seen Jesus standing.
